Brueghel's dynasty started with Pieter Bruegel the Elder who was born near 1525
in a family of peasants in Breugel not far from Breda in the Netherlands and died
in 1569 in Brussels.
Near 1545 Pieter Bruegel the Elder joins the workshop
of the painter Pieter Coecke as an apprentice. In 1551 he is admitted in the
Painters' Guild of Antwerp as a master.
In 1563, Pieter Bruegel the Elder
marries his master's daughter, Mayken Coecke with whom he will have three children
(two boys and a girl, Mary) who modified the spelling of the family's forename
from Bruegel to Brueghel.
The elder of his sons, Pieter II Brueghel the
known as of Hell (due to his mischieves) has mainly done copies of his father's
works or have dealt with the same subjects with some differences, such as the
Triumph of Death or the Wedding
The younger of sons of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Jan
I Brueghel the Elder(1568-1625),
known as de Velours (Velvet) for the extreme softness and richness of his colours,
he is better than his brother.

Pieter Brueghel the Younger will have a son Pieter III Brueghel (born in
1589) who will be too a painter.
Brueghel the Elder will have a son Jan II Brueghel the Younger (1601-1678) who
will be too a painter and whose second son, Abraham (1631-1690) will be also a
Brueghel's family genealogy
