The Brueghel's dynasty started with Pieter Bruegel the Elder who was born near 1525 in a family of peasants in Breugel not far from Breda in the Netherlands and died in 1569 in Brussels.

Near 1545 Pieter Bruegel the Elder joins the workshop of the painter Pieter Coecke as an apprentice.
In 1551 he is admitted in the Painters' Guild of Antwerp as a master.

In 1563, Pieter Bruegel the Elder marries his master's daughter, Mayken Coecke with whom he will have three children (two boys and a girl, Mary) who modified the spelling of the family's forename from Bruegel to Brueghel.

The elder of his sons, Pieter II Brueghel the Younger
(1564-1637), known as of Hell (due to his mischieves) has mainly done copies of his father's works or have dealt with the same subjects with some differences, such as the Triumph of Death or the Wedding Danse.

The younger of sons of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Jan I Brueghel the Elder
(1568-1625), known as de Velours (Velvet) for the extreme softness and richness of his colours, he is better than his brother.

Jan Brueghel the Elder (de Velours) was excellent in painting still-life of flowers
that you may see by clicking here.

Pieter Brueghel the Younger will have a son Pieter III Brueghel (born in 1589) who will be too a painter.

Jan Brueghel the Elder will have a son Jan II Brueghel the Younger (1601-1678) who will be too a painter and whose second son, Abraham (1631-1690) will be also a painter.
