The Hodegetria's image became more widely used in the tenth century, after the period of iconoclasm in Byzantine art from an earlier type where the Virgin's right hand was on Christ's knee.
An example of the former type is the Salus Populi Romani icon in the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica in Rome.
