Huysum was born in Amsterdam in 1682 and died in the same city on February the
This Dutch painter was the son of Justus van Huysum who was
famous for his paintings of doors and vases.
Half of his works which
are in museums are landscapes with imaginary lakes and fields, with antique ruins
and buildings, where forests look too still and lacking of life.
his representations of fruits and flowers are of a very high quality, with a delicate
execution of the velvety aspect of fruits or the delicacy of petals.
They were acquired in particular by the king of Poland, the tsar of Russia and
the Duke of Orleans.
In England, Robert Walpole gave him much fame.
At the top of this page, you will find two flower paintings of Jan van Huysum,
the first one exhibited at the National Gallery in London and the second one exhibited
at the National Gallery in Washington.
